thankful

this is the spot. we end up here (@ the grand lux cafe) whenever we’re together in the city for one of Derek’s check ups at Northwestern. this place marks a spot in time for us…and the many steps forward since then. it was a blip. a very short season of time really, but it’s been burned into our hearts forever.

we feel thankful today. for The Light that shone thru the darkness then. for The Light that directs us still. i read recently that light dispels darkness. that darkness cannot remain where there is light. a simple word really, but there’s so much truth wrapped into that little string of words. there have been times we stood in complete darkness this last year or so. most of the time we couldn’t see too far ahead. just a few steps at a time. it’s a beautiful thing really, when your eyes are confined to a small path, you come to see all the blessings and life you have right where you are. may it always be so Lord. may our eyes look to you in between strides.

“Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto on my path.” Psalm 119:105

His November 2015 check-up

i love seeing his progress and healing in pictures. seeing how his face and body filled back out over time.  it’s funny to me how sometimes we think our bodies are slow to heal. it takes so much longer and so much more work to put them back together after things go wrong. i wonder sometimes why we don’t give our hearts and minds the same leeway we give our bodies. we know the work we have to put in on the outside, but think about the internal damage we undergo from this unkind world.

the image below is from the year before, at one of his check-ups right after he was hospitalized.
